I leave in TWO DAYS. Not even, really. I leave Saturday at 5:58am. Which means I have the rest of the day today & then all of tomorrow & then one sleepless night with an alarm that goes off at way-too-early-o’clock & then I’m off. That’s it. In the air. On another continent. Truly truly traveling the world! Holy crap. I’m thrilled &, to be honest, a little nervous. In a very excited & I don’t regret this at all kind of way, but still nervous.
I’ve been away from my family & friends, but the longest trip to date was a month in Japan as an exchange student in high school. In the next three months, I’ll be missing my mamma, my dad, & my little old lady dog very much. For the first month, when I am in Uganda & before we meet up in Rome, I’ll absolutely definitely be missing Sam & even though I’ll see him relatively soon, I already know it’s going to be hard to say goodbye tomorrow.
All that to say that on our roadtrip down Highway One last week (best drive ever) to El Capitan Canyon for my photography conference, we made a last minute spontaneous stop in Monterey for a mini vacation, just the two of us. It had been a sort of plan, but we didn’t have official plans besides spending time with just the two of us, so we didn’t reserve anything ahead of time.
We scrolled through HotelTonight in the morning, looking for something cute & close to the beach. There’s a decent number of choices so it was a bit hard to pick, but when I saw how close this one was to the beach, I knew we had to book. I don’t like to spend a lot of money on anything, even travel & hotels, so cost was important. For $127 ($109 for the room + $18 for parking, which was not-optional), we got everything we wanted. Without HotelTonight, a last minute room like this (queen sized bed & non-oceanview) would have cost us $160 plus parking (so approximately $178), so I was happy with the savings. Some of the fancier hotels have an even larger discount, too. It all depends on where you are, really. (p.s. Use code ‘Adventure25’ for $25 off your first booking!)
The beach front view was killer. & since it was a grey day when we were there, it was almost empty, too! So pretty.
The hotel isn’t super cute & stylish, more functional, but they do have some seriously wonderful amenities. We arrived just as happy hour was ending, but we sat & enjoyed the dusky ocean view regardless. The chairs are nice & made of leather & the windows are floor to ceiling, which makes all the difference.
There’s not much that’s more magical than a rainy evening over the ocean, you know? Sam & I held hands & just watched the waves crash on the empty beach.
The hotel really is beachfront, so we spent some time wandering the beach in the morning. You can see all of Monterey from the sand & it’s a short drive if you want to do any of the major attractions: Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row, the 17 Mile Drive… you get the idea. I don’t think you could hang out here without a car, but since I’ve never tried, I’m really just not sure. It’s a lovely place though. Wonderful for a long weekend getaway, ya know?
Even though it was grey, it was pretty warm. I really really loved having the beach to ourselves: it’s one of my favorite things. There were dozens of seagulls at one end & the waves were small enough that you could wade without getting surprised with a big splash. We took our shoes off & just hung out. So relaxing.
I wish the pool had been oceanside, but it’s still nice. Decently sized & there’s a jacuzzi. With more time we would have spend the afternoon lounging by the pool & the evening in the jacuzzi. I invite you to enjoy the bit of the vacation that I didn’t get to. haha 😉
Seriously stunning though, no? The hotel is sort of on its own – there isn’t a ton of other distractions like other hotels, people walking around, bustle from shops & cars & so on. I loved that so much. When I head down to Monterey for a beach vacation I want just that: quiet, removed, & beach all to myself.
After the beach we headed into town for brunch. Café Trieste with its classic Italian colors was a good stop. Lots of space, casual feeling, & pretty good food.
All in all, this was a good weekend. I enjoyed the night in Monterey, the time on the beach, & most of all, just hanging out with Sam. While it won’t make the goodbye painless, this little weekend trip together will certainly give me something wonderful to “remember him by” while I’m gone. It sounds so cheesy, but really, isn’t that just lovely? xx
